Ondo Police Inspector Demoted to Sergeant for 17-Day Absence

Ondo Police Demotes Inspector for 17-Day Absence from Duty
BOLD MEDIA — April 2, 2025

The Nigeria Police Force, Ondo State Command, has demoted Inspector Moshebun Segun (AP No. 354466) to the rank of sergeant after he was found guilty of being absent from duty for 17 consecutive days.

The decision followed a review of the orderly room proceedings by Compol DFE Akure. Segun was found to have violated Paragraphs 1 and 3 of the Police Act and Regulation 2020 (as amended). Along with his demotion, he was ordered to forfeit 17 days’ pay.

Supol Ikare of Zone 17, Akure, enforced the ruling and issued a stern warning:

“I guarantee it will not happen again. If it happens again, I will dismiss you.”

Another official emphasized the seriousness of the disciplinary action, stating, “This is the last time.”

The proceedings concluded with a reminder about maintaining discipline, as one officer noted:

“I want you to do your job so when you leave this job, you don’t want to hear ‘Welcome to the Durand, Black Mubisa, Vietnam.’”

Similar Disciplinary Cases

This case follows other recent disciplinary actions within the police force. In March 2024, Police Officer James Okechukwu of the Ikeja Police Command, Lagos State, was suspended for unauthorized absence and negligence after missing duty for 12 consecutive days without approval.

In another instance, Inspector Richard Madu of the FCT Command in Abuja was demoted in 2022 after being absent from duty for over two weeks without a valid excuse. Like Segun, Madu was reduced to the rank of sergeant and lost his pay for the duration of his absence.

When contacted for comments, Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami, dismissed external scrutiny of the matter, stating:

“I don’t know what you want to confirm there. Police matters are internal.”
