The Delta State government has directed the provost of the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences to withdraw a query issued to student Osato Edobor over a video she posted regarding the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Edobor’s video captured moments from the event, highlighting how students allegedly humiliated the First Lady. Following the post, the college issued a query to Edobor, accusing her of misconduct and disrespecting Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. However, the state government has now intervened, instructing the institution to retract the disciplinary action.
In a 33-second video, State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, assured the public that no student was being victimized. He stated, “On the trending query issued to a student of the School of Nursing, Agbor, I have instructed the provost to withdraw the letter. We do not intend to victimize any student. I have also spoken to the student, who confirmed that the letter was withdrawn last night.”
A statement on the Delta State Government’s official X handle reaffirmed this, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to upholding the rights of students in health sciences. The statement read: “The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, has directed the immediate withdrawal of the query issued to Nursing Student Osato Edobor. This decision underscores our dedication to fostering a conducive learning environment for academic excellence.”
Earlier, reports indicated that Edobor had been asked to record a video thanking Governor Oborevwori for intervening. The initial query letter, signed by the college provost, Mrs. Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, cited Edobor’s actions as a violation of institutional standards, particularly those outlined in the Student Handbook under “Standardised Disciplinary Action for Some Punishable Offences No. 8, Page 21.”
The provost labeled Edobor’s act of recording and posting the video as a “malicious act” that contravened expected student behavior at official events. The letter demanded a written explanation in triplicate within 24 hours, warning of possible disciplinary consequences for non-compliance.
The controversy stems from a viral video showing nursing students rejecting the First Lady as their “mother” during her visit. In the footage, the event’s MC introduced Tinubu with the phrase, “Na our mama be this” (“This is our mother”), to which the students responded in unison, “Na your mama be this” (“This is your mother”), signaling their disapproval.
The incident underscores mounting frustration among Nigerians over economic hardships under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. When contacted, the college provost accused Edobor of disgracing the institution and violating the nursing code while in uniform.
When BoldMedia reached out to the college provost, Mrs. Evbodaghe, regarding the query, she accused Edobor of disgracing the school and violating the nursing code while in uniform.
